About three weeks ago, (YES! Life has been that stupid busy) I came across an
article in ITWeb that REALLY got up my nose. Our wonderful government is trying to control what people are publishing on the internet (or anything else "New Media"). To this I say, suck my constitutional right! They expect EVERY blog site (or is that article? I wasn’t too sure on the detail there) to have to go through a body much like the film and publication’s board to be rated. This at a cost to the citizens, not something government departments will take care of at a cost to the goverment as a service. Oh wait, if that happened it’d be 5 years before we were allowed to post one blog entry.
All good and well, we are trying to protect the children of the country by allowing parents to understand content their kids are reading and seeing. Although, if we take a step back and figure out what this implies is that parents are not really taking ownership of their kid’s upbringing. “No, we won’t educate our children to think for themselves. I’m too lazy to instill in my children the need to ask questions. I don't trust my children. I don't want to have to answer questions they may ask. I KNOW! Lets make the government do this and make it so I just have to feed them! Wait! Why do I have to feed them too!?”(another of my gripes...) Yes, this is what the government is putting it across as. It's that kids are becoming corrupted by this freedom of information. We have to CENSOR information. Hmmm… what happens when governments start censoring what we see, read, watch... ? Does propaganda start creeping into this?
The other side of the story is, that I have a right to have an opinion about ANYTHING I want, and if I want to express it using foul and completely uncouth language, I have EVERY right to do so. Why should I have to submit this through a board only to have them say “Right. This is not fit for publication, you may not post it.” Or even have them tell me to edit it to a point where it is no longer what I’m thinking..?
Have I misread the
ITWeb article? Have I missed what government is trying to do by implementing this law? If I haven’t, I see horrible things starting to happen. Where are my constitutional rights in this? What are the kids that are growing up going to have to face? Are we heading back to a point in time where government restricts what we see and hear, and feeds us only what they want us to hear? Where are gov-a-munt going with this lot?
