As usual, I was inspired as I was reading an article I was reading a bit earlier. The article was entitled "I write what I like" . It's elluding to the fact that one needs to mask their identity to be able to come completely clean in the way they express opinions, thoughts and feelings. To be fair, the writer did state that there are people do just post it and happily put their name to it.
In reading this, it made me start thinking. Should I be holding back what I write about? You know what happened the second that thought came to my mind directly after that. "No!" I laughed quietly to myself. Why should we be afraid to say what we want to? We live in a country where its our consititutional right to express what we feel and state our opinions. Sure, be able to justify statements you make about people. Don't spread malicious lies and rumours for the sake of it. But if you have an opinion why feel intimidated to express it?
In response some of the comments in the artile. I'm not afraid to express my opinions on the following topics:
Our health minster is the laughing stock of the international medical fraternity with her "wonderful cures". The recent press she's had is painting her in a bad light. Mmmm... very bright
In a strange turn of events, the ANC is backing up members of the DA, although I suspect that is just to let them get away with having their interests looked after by treating a "person holding such a high office should be treated with some decorum [and] respect."
So with the history of our country, I wonder if the current government and leaders have learnt from what happened to Steve Biko at the hands of the apartheid government. Freedom of speach is essential. We need free thinkers. We need the ability to communicate our thoughts and opinions.
As for general people. If you are a nice person, you don't spread viscous rumours, you take accountability for your actions, then you have nothing to fear about what may get said about you on your friend's blogs. And quite frankly if you bad mouthing someone without any fact behind it. You deserve to be put in the spot light. You deserve to have your name made mud. The truth will always come out.
I will write what I like. When I feel like it. I don't care who reads it. I can face the music. I can face the consequences. If I die because the government doesn't like what I've written, I just hope I become a martyr the likes of Steve Biko. (Yes, this is me having a bigger ego than I probably should at this point in time
). Why should we be afraid to express ourselves in whatever fashion so long as it isn't harming anyone physically or emotionally?
However, we still have civil liberties and we should be using them to try and make a change.
If they are going to shut us up anyway, at least we will go out shouting :-)
